The Alpha Foundation: Activities in Progress

Progress Report of ACLs
A new ACL was opened at Hafeez Baba Nagar C-2 Block in Old City. Kancha and Ambedkar Nagar ACLs were moved to better buildings. With this, the number of ACLs has reached 27.
A batch of 15 ACL teachers completed training at IRS Teachers Academy.

The Foundation sponsored 30 girls for training at National Institute of Rural Development in making different articles with recycled paper. Nine of them have been employed by the Icfai Press at Balanagar.

Senior Citizens Program (SCP)
Senior Citizens Program is in progress at seven ACLs and total number of beneficiaries is 54. Some of them are undergoing training in making incense sticks and leaf plates. A library has been provided to enable them to read newspapers and magazines. Some of them will participate in ACL work like cleaning and serving lunch.

The tally of ACLs outside Hyderabad as on June 30, 2008 is as under:
Bangalore

Vocational training programs were started in most of the ACLs. Senior citizen program were started in two ACLs. Healthcare camps were conducted in three ACLs. Home visits were organized in Bangalore to share the activities of the Foundation. Parents’ meetings were arranged in many ACLs.

Ahmedabad
A visit was organized for 20 students of Icfai – Maninagar (Distant Learning Program) to ACLs at Amraiwadi and Odhav.
 Aizawl
The ACL at Salem Veng was shifted to a new building. Mid-day meal will be prepared in the kitchen available in the new place.
Mumbai
As a result of the vocational training conducted at the Sathe Nagar ACL in tailoring, some trainees received orders from the neighboring areas to stitch dresses.
Agartala
A preliminary survey was conducted and proposal for starting an ACL at Aralia Para was submitted. Fifty-seven dropouts/non-school going children were identified. 
Dehradun                                   

Two ACLs were started at Khurbura Mohalla and Shivaji Marg. Both were inaugurated on July 1, 2008 by Prakash Pant, Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Tourism.

Vocational Training for Slum Youth
National Academy of Construction (NAC): Curtain stitching course was concluded for four candidates and all of them opted for self-employment.

Confederation of Indian Industry (CII): Under vocational training program taken up in collaboration with the CII, the Foundation sponsored six candidates for computer training and two candidates for two-wheeler and four-wheeler mechanic course.

Health Camps
Exclusive Eye Camps at ACLs
Exclusive eye camps were conducted at five different ACLs at Patel Nagar, Nehru Nagar, Chenna Reddy Nagar and Singareni Colony I & II in association with Drishti Foundation (Dr. Ranga Reddy Lions Eye Institute), Secunderabad. Around 400 children and parents attended the camp. A total of 151 spectacles were given to the parents and three to the children. Twenty-five Bitol Spot cases and several vitamin ‘A’ deficiency cases were found and treated.
Exclusive Health-cum-Eye Camp
A health-cum-eye camp was organized at Ashray Akruti, Srinagar Colony (a voluntary organization working for hearing handicapped children and supported by the Foundation) in association with Lions Dundoo Eye Institute, Secunderabad. Around 165 children and staff were screened at the camp. Eighteen patients were supplied spectacles free of cost. Five children and one teacher suffering from severe ailments were referred to the hospital for further treatment.
 General Health-cum-Eye Camp
A general health-cum-eye camp was organized at Singareni Colony, Saidabad, in association with Lions Dundoo Eye Institute, Secunderabad. Around 800 people attended the camp. Twenty patients were sent for cataract operation. A total of 164 patients were provided spectacles free of cost.
Dental Camp
A free dental camp was organized for orphan children of Anees-Ul-Gurbha (a home supported by the Foundation) in association with Dr.Hyder (dental surgeon). The doctor screened all the children and identified 20 children for cleaning and a few more for tooth extraction and root canal treatment.

Skin Camp at IRS, Balanagar
The Foundation organized a skin camp at IRS, Balanagar, with the help of Subhash Kumar, a dermatologist. The doctor counseled everyone about the preventive measures to be adopted in order to avoid skin problems.      
Nutrition Awareness Program at IRS, Fateh Nagar:
The Foundation conducted a nutrition awareness camp at IRS – Fathenagar in association with Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS).

Alpha Health Workers (AHWs)
Blood pressure is being checked twice a week covering about 100 people in the slums. Health workers are also counseling the slum-dwellers on HIV/AIDS and TB. In June 2008, 629 slum people were counseled about health problems. Among them, 266 patients were referred to charity hospitals for further diagnosis and treatment.         
A Special Case
Rizya Begum, aged 40 years
Anees, a Alpha health worker in Rasoolpura area, identified Rizya Begum, a resident of Indramma Nagar, suffering from endometrium, endocarsonoma (uterus cancer). She was counseled and taken to Gandhi Hospital for diagnosis and treatment. She underwent hysterectomy. Further, follow-up is being done by AHW.
Prem Nagasai, IRS, Rasoolpura

The Foundation is supporting his post-operative treatment with a donation of Rs. 50,000.  

Legal Aid
11th Clinical Legal Aid Camp and Mega Lok Adalat

The 11th Clinical Legal Aid Program (CLAP) was conducted in association with R R  Dist. Legal Services Authority, Hyderabad.  Fifty-two cases were resolved out of 70 cases identified for reference to Lok Adalat.

Private – Private Partnership
Dalit Mahila Mandali - Addagutta (Old age home for women)
A walker was donated to Jaya, an inmate of the home, who met with an accident and fractured her left leg.  Desire Society – IDA Bollaram (Care and Support Centre for HIV/AIDS-affected children)
The organization has taken five new children suffering from HIV/AIDS
Ayusha Nilayam (Home for children of HIV/AIDS-affected parents)
The children are performing well in their classes and the number of inmates has reached 20 with the addition of five new students.

Sampurna Organization – Old Malakpet (Home for mentally challenged children)
The Foundation donated physiotherapy equipment to the home to treat  physical deformities.

Anees-Ul- Gurba (Orphanage at Nampally)
A summer camp was conducted at Anees-Ul-Gurba, supported by the Foundation. Classes in English, embroidery, tailoring, and computers were held at the camp. Around 25 boys and girls got trained in computer operations as part of the summer camp.

Shri Guru Sankalpam (Home for mentally and physically challenged)

After reopening of the home on June 12, 2008, the new admissions are steadily increasing. Ten new students have joined this year taking the total strength of students to 50.

Medical, Educational and Nature Service (MEANS)
MEANS is an old age home being supported by the Foundation from January 2008. Medicines and fruits are being provided every month. The budget required to support this home has been enhanced to cover new members who have joined.
Ashray-Akruti (A voluntary organization working for hearing handicapped children)

A general health-cum-eye camp was conducted here and around 165 students benefitted.
Swadhar – Ramanthapur (Home for orphan women, victims of domestic violence and  women trafficking)
Spoken English and beautician training courses were organized for the benefit of the inmates.
Apana Sahara – Talabkatta, Old City (Orphanage for children)
The Foundation has started supporting this home recently by partially paying the salaries. There are around 40 orphan boys and girls.

Public – Private Partnership
Old Age Home and State Home for Girls – Under the Department of Women and Child Welfare at Yousufguda

Due to efforts of the project officer, the Foundation has been able to obtain two cable connections for this home with permanent installation of Dish Antenna free of cost.

Children’s Home for Boys at Saidabad
Fifteen children of this home are doing tailoring and stitching course. Five senior boys have learnt stitching dresses manually and rest of them are practicing on machines. Four machines have been deployed for training. 
Government Home for Physically-challenged Girls, Champapet

The vocational training course in tailoring organized for the benefit of 25 inmates of this home is in progress. Seven varieties of stitching have been covered in one month.

AlphaGreen

On the occasion of the World Environment Day on June 5, 2008, a massive tree plantation drive was taken up in the Icfai University campus on Rajawala Chakrata Road in Dehradun in collaboration with IBS-Alpha Chapter, Dehradun. Nearly 100 saplings of big trees were planted. A documentary, “An inconvenient Truth” was screened in the evening.
In collaboration with the Social Forestry Department, 167 saplings were planted in around 1,000 sq. ft. forest land near Maharashtra Nagar of Mankhurd Area in Mumbai.
