Silence is golden. Not always!!!

One fine day, this is all what I was wondering while thinking within myself about silence….my views clashed between two schools of thought and left me with the below discussed dilemma.

"Silence is more eloquent than words."
Most of us agree to the above mentioned statement. Sometimes silence is more eloquent than words. When we are not able to express ourselves; when we try to ignore/avoid some unwanted thoughts, then silence becomes eloquent. It helps us introspect and understand things a little better; it provides time to analyze as what went wrong and sometimes gives us a reason to smile and move ahead. When we don't have people around us and there is no one to help us calm down, that is when silence counts and finally peace surrounds. And that certainly makes things easier to understand, the complications starts fading as the solutions lie inside us but again, though sometimes only, the noise around us hides all the reasons to smile. So here we can say that silence is a stress buster.

But then there is another school of thought which says that it sometimes prudent to break the silence and that too looks so true.

"Our lives began to end the day we become silent about the things that matter."

This is something said by Socrates. And I truly agree to this. Yes I know it’s opposite to what's been said above but as it says clearly it’s about the things that matter. Because most of the times we decide to keep silent as we don't want to confront people and sometimes the consequences. But never do we realize that by doing so, we actually are running away from the solutions. Silence is good but it should not have any repercussions. Often it happens that we look at the immediate effect but ignore the final one. We don't understand that today if we speak out, that will help resolve problems of tomorrow. It will simplify the complications. It’s good to be silent today but not at the cost of tomorrow. Sometimes we decide to keep silent because we don't want to hurt others. But we don't understand that it will affect them later on. And here the silence becomes the cause for stress. So sometimes its better to speak out and sort out, may be the problem is not as big as we were thinking. May be the person was even more understanding than we expected him/her to be. May be breaking the silence will break the ice too. It also helps us to clarify things in case there is a burden of any pre-conceived notions. All I am trying to say is this: our lives begin to end the day we become silent about the things that matter. So go ahead and say it, if you are sure about what you are saying.

Now, again I ended up writing two different schools of thought. But as it is said each coin has two sides the same goes here, its better to keep silent and be resilient but at times its best to burst out of silence.

To quote an example, lets take the very much hyped and talked about 'happy go lucky' attitude of Mumbaikars. It’s said that the city never stops and so does the common man. Be it rains, floods or blasts etc, the city 'silently' returns to life the very next day. Is this silence good? On one way it shows the spirit of Mumbaikars and on the other hand it shows their helplessness or 'I don't care' attitude which needs to be changed; they need to ask out for their rights and hence they need to break the silence.

This example further brings out one more point, that it is more important to understand the situation and to decide carefully where to keep silent and when to break the mum.

Sometimes good and at times vulnerable, silence has got its own virtue. That’s why, it’s said silence is golden but not always!!!
