Prateek Bothra, IBS Kolkata ('03)

born and brought up in the City of Joy ‘Kolkata’, is a Manager with HDFC Bank. With the time spent with Page 3, Prateek starts an interesting journey to unlock his memories. Here’s the excerpt from all that he has to say about his life, career, job and various other things.

About me…

I, along with my family and parents live in Kolkata, the City of Joy. My father has now retired and mother is a housewife. I had completed my M.Com from Calcutta University before joining the IBS.

My wife, Rekha, is an MBA from Symbiosis (Pune). She was working with the Rajhans Metals Private Limited, Jamnagar as Chief Accountant.

Right now, Rekha has taken a career break to look after our one and half year old son Rahul. and also to help me stay focused on my work and career. I have been really lucky to get a supporting life partner like her. She has been more of a friend than anything else.

Career after passing from IBS…

IBS has enabled me to join the corporate world. I was placed at Citifinancial as a Senior Executive. But in no time, I was given the responsibility as Branch Manager of Durgapur Branch, handling all fronts of business. It was a boost in my career. Joining HDFC Bank was one of my most important career decisions.

My current profile…

My current profile is as a Senior Manager at HDFC Bank. This organization has given me ample opportunity to grow. Presently, I am handling two departments—Commodity Exchange and Correspondent Banks. It has been three and half years here and time seems to fly faster than I realized. It has been great working at HDFC where I achieved a tremendous boost towards my personal and professional growth.

Handling high-pressure situation…

Strangely, I love working under pressure. I believe that stress brings out the best in an individual. All it needs is to look at the challenge with a positive outlook. Life then, becomes very easy and smooth. Fortunately, my wife is a very strong support. I always strive to play my roles as husband and father best. I always spend time with my family on weekends. Watching movie, going out on a drive with family is always fun.

My vision…

I aspire to be a good and successful human being. That is the first priority. Knowledge coupled with humaneness makes a man’s life worth living.

Balancing work and family…

This is a real tricky thing. I honestly believe that balancing these two worlds, though very difficult, is not impossible. Proper management skills are all that is needed. There are times when the family needs more time and there are other times when work needs more attention. As a family, we try and spend as much time as we can and make a point to have dinner together. Sundays and other off-days, I try to spend quality time with my family. Quality time spent with them also helps me relax and de-stress after a rough week’s work.

Friends at IBS…

I had a small yet close-knit group of friends while at IBS and I continue to stay in touch with them. We are all at different corners of the world today but we find ways to be in touch.

Lessons learnt from life …

  • Be honest to yourself
  • Believe in yourself

These are the two things which I have learnt from life. Anything and everything is possible if these things are being followed. I have also imbibed a lot from my dad and wife.

Words for the young starters…

As told above, “Be honest to yourself” and “believe in yourself”. You can achieve whatever you want in life.
