Me and my family …
I am presently in Texas working as a Senior Analyst for Barnes and Click Inc, a division of RW Beck Inc. We specialize in Oil and Gas Consulting. My father, Mr. R. S. Lakshminarayan retired last year from EIL (Engineers India Limited) and is now working for the Essar Group. My mother, Mrs. Manjula Narayan is a housewife. My brother, Mr. Neeraj Narayan works for the Texas Department of Public Safety in Austin, TX. My wife, Kristal Narayan, works as an Administrative Assistant for Reata Rehabilitation Center in Ponder, TX.
My personal and professional graph …
I got married recently at the ripe old age of 32 years. I can honestly say that marriage changes a man for the better, and that’s exactly what happened to me. I recently bought a house and a new car. So, personal life is wonderful at this point. Career wise, I have had my ups and downs. Because of 9/11, the hiring freeze was initiated in an economy which was sliding downwards. I enrolled for my Ph. D. in Finance from University of North Texas. That path did not start off well. I was indisposed for the major part of the year, because of an accident. However, after recovering I decided to go for a Masters in Real Estate, but before I could finish, I got a job as a Financial Analyst with Freddie Mac in VA. Then I relocated to Chicago to work for Citigroup, and then to Houston, TX with Reliant Energy. I ended up in Dallas, TX working for Barnes and Click Inc. I also gained permanent resident status in April 2007.
The sojourn in IBS …
IBS definitely helped me with the ways of finance, which is my talent and skill. The PGDBA program gave me an edge in my MBA, so I did not have to study much to get good grades. I remember the good times that I had with my friends over there. Overall, IBS was a great enjoyable experience.
Ideas of a perfect life…
In my opinion, there is no such thing as a perfect life. Life is full of wants and needs. Once you get something, you want some other thing. It is a constant process of achieving and setting new goals.
Life after IBS…
After IBS, I was employed with TATA Infotech. I did not get much of a chance to use the financial skills that I learnt at IBS. Only after coming to the USA, I had a chance to prove my worth. So far, no complaints with life in general.
Facing high pressure situations at work…
Deal with it. Go for a walk if it clears your mind. In the end, you have to remember that you are facing high pressure situation because either you did this to yourself or you just came up short in your efforts.
Balancing work and family…
I did not have that issue before marriage. But it’s a different situation altogether after marriage. So far, I am doing okay in terms of balancing work and family.
Biggest lesson in life…
Always be positive in your outlook, there is always light at the end of the tunnel.
Distressing…
Not having a job, even though you are the most qualified that they have seen and met.
Your hobbies…
Poker, Darts, Pool
Lessons life has taught and ideals…
Lessions :
- Don’t take things for granted.
- Over-confidence can take you to the bottom of the pits.
- Knowledge is not everything, luck amounts quite a bit to your success.
- Use your judgment in making friends.
Ideals :
- Work smart, not hard. If it requires both, use both.
How connected are you with your friends / batch mates at IBS?
Not very well. Only recently I got in touch with a few. Deven, Parin, Kaushal, Rohit. Ranjeet contacted me a while back, but haven’t been able to get back to them. I have been too busy these days.
Advice to the young students interested in pursuing a career in your sector…
I was lucky enough to get this position, because of the analyst experience, my education in finance and chemical engineering. I am not sure what kind of background the students have over there, but to get to this point, you need a lot of luck.
Plans for the future…
Hope for the best. Raise a family. Build a ranch. Retire. ◊
