I am a workaholic trying to turn otherwise. I have always enjoyed solid support from the master of my dreams and destiny, my wife Lakshmi, who is a homemaker par excellence and my children.
The sojourn at IBS…
Well, we were the first batch to have the classroom sessions. Guinea pigs, should I say? We had to surmount a lot of challenges- brand recognition, proper classrooms, faculty, library… you name it!
Our batch had about 50% of students with at least 2 years prior work experience. So here was a group that had forsaken good engineering jobs. In spite of the initial struggling, most of us overcame the difficulties successfully. Now most of my batch mates are pretty well placed though not necessarily in the finance industry. We owe special thanks to Mr. Raghupathy, the then coordinator, and Ms. Geetha, one of the faculty member, for their untiring efforts and support through out our 2 years stint.
Handling high pressure situations…
Easier said than done, but a good temperament, in my view, is the key. It's easier to rub the wrong side of the colleagues during high pressure situations but what I have learnt is that poise and confidence in the self and the team help overcome these challenges.
Balancing work and family…
Weekends are for me and my family. Don't compromise on this to the extent possible. Delegation of work is important and mind you it's not easy. You need a smart set of team members to delegate to and should also know when and what to delegate!
De stressing…
° Yoga
° Don’t carry work home.
Friends and batch mates at IBS…
Five members in my current group are from IBS –two from my batch and three from the immediate junior batch. Engagements with work and family as well as constant travel don’t leave much room to meet others though I try to connect with a few of them over the phone once in a while.
Suggestions for the young starter…
I don't believe in sermonizing. The current generation is too smart for that. I would just like to share a few thoughts.
° Better start your career in a big company and then move over to a medium sized organization
° Develop niche skills that would hold you good in the long run - if this means short term monetary compromise so be it.
° Always look for opportunities to increase personal brand value in whichever organization you work. This is very CRITICAL. ◊
