Drive out fears

Remember Willy Loman from “Death of a Salesman “? He once had said, “After all the highways, and the trains, and the years, you end up worth more dead than alive”. Exactly! Willy was a living dead person who was trapped beneath his own fears and stressors.

Are you also the one to feel like this everyday at your workplace?

Are you no longer satisfied with your job? Are you questioning if you are in the right job? Are you contemplating a change? Are you no longer confident to produce quality? If so, you are probably suffering from the burn-out and not necessarily from a bad job.

Stress Takes a Toll

How many times did you watch someone get a promotion when your hard work went unnoticed? How many times your attempts to bring about change or offer insights to upper echelon have fallen on deaf ears? Yes, we understand what you feel—working in an unjust environment can make you sick – really sick.

The Reasons behind it All

To control workplace stress, the first thing that you have to do is to understand the reasons that are putting a stress on you. These are some of the causes that may be bothering you. But don’t panic if you don’t find your stressor here. After all the tension that you have, this should not add to your already long list! Just joking!

The Survival Sutras

Here are some suggestions to eliminate the burn-out and stress at your workplace. Think about your own situation and your own tendencies in stressful situations to select your best stress management strategies from this list.

Remember the good times

Think of the times when you felt a sense of professional achievement and identify the factors that contributed to that success, such as selling the big deal you had been working on for so long, winning promotion or creating new ideas.

Avoid negativity
Use positive language in the work place. Negative responses create an image in our minds that the subconscious soaks up. So, instead of looking at your new assignment and grumbling that it’s unrealistic; try to look at it and think, "If I break this down into manageable, smaller targets I can see how I will achieve this."
Backbiting colleagues, gossips and office politics can, given time, have a negative effect on you. Counteract negativity by focusing on the positives aspects of your work.

Get away more
Allow time to go out of the office and go out for lunch or coffee instead of sitting at the desk where you spend so much of your day. Turn off your phone, shut down your system and take some "me-time" away from work. These may seem frivolous, but believe me, you will return refreshed and rejuvenated.

Change your daily routine
The monotony of performing the same tasks daily can be real frustrating. Take a different route to work, reorganize your desk or ask your boss for a new challenge. Maybe you will not excel the first time...doesn’t matter! You will the next time!

Finally, ask for help
There is no shame in asking for help, we are all human beings not computers or robots. All of us go through tough periods and you will earn the respect of your managers and peers if you ask for their advice and support.
If you ask me, I firmly believe that what comes around goes around – one day you may be the one that someone turns to for help.

Just remember one thing that nothing is absolute. If there is stress, it can also be managed. You just need to be willing. Workplace stress also can be managed and put to control with only a few and easy efforts. Though stress management takes time and practice, developing stress management skills is important for your overall health and well-being. To use a cliché, knowledge is power. Now you know what you can do when you are burnt-out. You can now avoid letting things slip out of control like Willy Loman. It is not the situation that you are in now that matters; it’s what you do about it. So enjoy living and more so—Enjoy Working! Remember, the world is yours to win!!
