A lot has been said about the Inner Beauty. People talk a lot about beauty being skin  deep…about beauty lying in someone’s heart and mind and not only in what the eyes can see. I have, myself, written on the same. However, since the last few weeks I have been wondering about what should be placed on a higher scale with regards to beauty!

  1. Our looks
  2. Our thoughts or
  3. Our feelings

Since all three are closely related they can also be apparently contradictory. I am not going to discuss the ‘looks’ & ‘thoughts’ here. They have been discussed several times in different ways. My idea is to present a viewpoint on the ‘feelings’ aspect. This not only helps us in finding peace but is also very much desired in the ever running quest of achieving everything. I have reached at the conclusion that ‘We are what we feel’. What matters most is the individual’s comfort level with his/her own surroundings. Sometimes, it’s the loved ones who influence a little. Despite all the influences, our survival depends on the comfort zone that we create for ourselves underneath our skin.

Even the definitions about beauty decide their respective beauty regimes as well. Some believe in yoga, others go to gyms or attend the art of living sessions while others follow regular grooming sessions at the beauty clinics. They try to become beautiful in their own ways.

One more dimension to this discussion is “Contentment”. One must feel content in all that he does in life. Sometimes life takes us to avenues we never dream about, sometimes circumstances influence the path of life and at other times we are so much involved with the current canvas of life that we do not even realize our life has taken a turn about than the straight road that we had initially taken. This happens when we tend to see only the bright & beautiful colors around. We notice only the pinks, yellows, red & green. Nothing remotely dull is acceptable because we remain deeply engrossed in the colorful but ambiguous world around us. As a result, the fear of loss imbibes and the colors start fading and we refuse to change, to accept the grey color which life has brought in.

This reluctance results in mental conflicts which can affect almost all spheres of life.  This happens because we start inculcating the feeling of discomfort underneath our own skin. It results in trauma and loss of concentration. We drown ourselves so much into this depression that we expect things to turn right on their own. We become impatient, lose hope, tend to blame others. The only thing which we do not try to do is ‘To Overcome’. In extreme cases, we even start hating ourselves in our skin.

We curse God for our existence, and then having suffered what was destined, we even reach a point of saturation of pain. That doesn’t mean the pain is not there but we stop making a conscious effort to overcome. We start following the philosophy ‘Time is the best healer’. We accept and we wishing to be content again. This is when we are close to spirituality. We try to concentrate on other aspects of life which are still beautiful and yet were ignored till now.

Life is not a bed of roses and it never will be. What matters is to get accustomed to both roses and thorns. It’s inevitable to have both good and bad times in the journey called life. We cannot avoid them but we can fight them with resilience.  We just have to learn to enjoy life and work towards continuous contentment.

It not only stops us from being emotionally dependent but also adds stability to life and helps fight “Emotional Volatility” which is very much prevalent phenomena in current corporate arena. It helps us manage stress and create the much required balance in life.

All I am trying to say here is “Feel content; feel beautiful underneath your own skin”.
