Global Warming

You must have heard this song Tum Chalo to Hindustan Chale by this time. Taking this song and video as the background….I would like to put one issue, Global Warming, in perspective. Many of you will move on to the next section as I mention this word and say how it concerns us. But don’t do that my friends. Hold on…read it plzzzz!!!

Let’s have a fast look at the most disconcerting facts below:

countries (65 to be exact) are likely to lose over 15% of their agricultural output by 2100. Friends, I hope that I have got your attention at least by now! And I have been able to make you sit back and ponder about this serious issue!

No? Still the doubting Thomas? In that case, please hear to all what the experts have

to say! Just last year, two top scientists surprised their colleagues by projecting that the Arctic sea ice was melting so rapidly that it could disappear entirely by the summer of 2040.

After reviewing his own new data, NASA climate scientist Jay Zwally said very recently: "At this rate, the Arctic Ocean could be nearly ice-free at the end of summer by 2012, much faster than previous predictions."

1. The Ganges: This mighty river of paramount importance has started to dry up as its source glacier, the Gangotri, is shrinking at a rate of 40 yards a year, nearly twice as fast as two decades ago.

Scientists predict that the glacier could be gone by 2030.

• According to the WHO estimate, around 1, 50,000 people, all around the world, die every year due to climate-change-related issues.
• World Conservation Union says that a minimum of 40% of the world’s species are being threatened and global warming is one of the main culprits.
• British scientists warn a surge of dangerous volcanic eruptions.
• Doctors warn global warming will bring more cardiovascular problems like heart attacks.
• A study by IISS found that reduced water supplies and hotter temperatures would mean that many

Ways to fight Global warming

Despairing over something will not solve the problem, Friends!
We must do something about this. I have here some of the steps that we can try out:

At our workplaces:
• Utilize natural lights at workplaces instead of hanging the curtains and using the artificial light.
• Have a culture of car pooling/bike sharing. This sure lessens the traffic as well as the pollution.
• Avoid pressing that Print button frequently…more the papers … more the felling of trees which directly affect the environment
• Switch off lights/monitors whenever it’s not in use. Practice this habit at public places also, like the staircase during daytime.

At our homes:

• Have real plants instead of artificial plants. Yes, at times maintenance becomes a problem. Go for cactus then. They don’t require much maintenance.
• Use solar energy.
• Plant more than enough number of trees. Sometimes more cannot be enough.
• Gift saplings on special occasions to our friends and relatives…. it would be different as well as helpful.

And lastly…not for any gimmick or any propaganda, but let’s join hand to generate awareness and take necessary steps about this issue. I am sure then these grave consequences can be faced. One of such examples is the famous Mumbai Unplug event, inspired by the Sydney Earth Hour, where the attempt was to switch off the electricity for an hour on 15th December 2007. Though the event was not as successful as the Sydney event, it was at least a beginning to fight the evil and an attempt to make the earth a better place to live.

In this e-world, we can initiate such exercises by mailing all the people we know or circulating them in social networking sites, simply put, publicizing in any way that we can.

These may all sound gyan…but if that little boy in the video that I mentioned in the beginning would thought the same way…the traffic would have remain stuck.

Time has come now to take matters in our own hands. We may not do all but together we can attempt at combating this collective danger!
