Biggest Lesson
This question reminds me of guitar legend Steve Vai’s song – For the love of God. Spirituality was always the basis of my life and with time it has become more ingrained. Trust and faith in God is the key to long time success, peace of mind, humility, metal toughness and overall well being. There isn’t and there can be no bigger lesson in life.
Idol…
Lord Krishna…because there isn’t a better teacher, guide, friend, confidant, healer, philosopher etc etc etc. He is the one and only source of all my strength and power.
Piece of advice
Great communication skills – written and spoken is critical. Be well read and well aware. Become comfortable with numbers. Master MS Excel. Lay special emphasis on Business Statistics. Debashish has had a very exciting career immediately after IBS Ahmedabad. “I joined a bunch of mavericks from IIM Kolkata, IIT Delhi and Delhi University to launch the hugely successful dotcom venture www.egurucool.com. Out of the very few successful dotcom ventures to have originated from India, egurucool.com was amongst the first to have received substantial venture capital funding from Chrys Capital, International Finance Corporation (the lending arm of the World Bank) and Rupert Murdoch’s Newscorp Inc. I experienced entrepreneurship first hand and we won many awards and enjoyed wide media coverage.” Couple of years later debashish moved ahead to explore the Business Process Outsourcing industry. On the way he worked with the back office businesses of global corporations like GE and HSBC. “The exposure was awesome and the learning great.” Exposure to Six Sigma at both these companies helped debashish discover his interest in process improvement and metrics and measurement.
“In September 2006 – when I was in the Six Sigma Black Belt role with HSBC Global Resourcing at Visakhapatnam – I got the opportunity to move to ABN AMRO Consumer Bank as the Head - Quality Assurance for India. And so here I am enjoying my career in the BFSI (Banking and Financial Services) vertical which is perhaps the most in vogue vertical globally.” Debashish has experience with IT, BPO & BFSI verticals. It has been a great journey for him though he admits that it has not been a cake walk. “Moulding a great career is very tough indeed” he says. |

Debashish feels that his faith in almighty has pulled him through all the tough situations that he has faced incuding handling high pressure situations, and rising demand on time and energy. “Honestly, my definition of high pressure has changed since I joined ABN AMRO consumer bank. The pace is crazy and the expectations higher than Mt. Everest. The demands on time and energy are relentless. As the Head – Quality Assurance of ABN AMRO consumer bank, I am responsible for all Metrics and Measurements, management of complaints and requests, relationship management with regulatory bodies like the BANKING CODES AND STANDARDS BOARD OF INDIA (BCSBI, which is an RBI body), ensuring that as a bank we are taking all the steps necessary to ensure compliance to regulatory standards, approving all process notes and customer communication from a service delivery perspective, managing key client engagement projects etc. I have a team of direct reports as well as people who report to me from the regions. It wasn’t easy initially but my faith in the almighty has pulled me through.” So now we know what keeps him fresh and going and helps him meet the expectations of the bank. “I also have serious interests in areas like music, sports, wildlife and reading which ensure that there is the right kind of vibrancy in my life.”
Debashish believes in 100 % work- life balance and says “without which a burn-out is imminent”. Though he admits that a little balance is required and sometimes he is required to work for 14-15 hrs a day. Though “Once at home I do not discuss work at all” he says.
On the future of Banking sector, Debashish says “India will see the opening up of the banking sector in 2009. Banking will be regulated even more. With Indians becoming wealthier, demand for high quality wealth managers will continue to rise. Differentiating product and service offerings will become even more difficult and hence; quality of customer service will decide client loyalty. Technology will play an increasingly important role given the fact that most customers are demanding high speed banking services. The key challenge in India will be to educate customers on financial planning, management, products and the way to use available banking technology.” |
