Mr. Paritosh Garga, IBS Gurgaon , ('00)

Darashaw & Company

Investment Banker

Mr. Paritosh Garga, IBS Gurgaon (’00), likes to define himself as a simple, day-dreaming family man. He is presently located at New Delhi, working with Darashaw & Company as an Investment Banker. His job involves assisting corporate sectors in managing their finances better and showing them a path to continuous and sustainable growth. He has an academic aptitude as well. After a B.E. in Electricals, MBA and CFA, one would assume studies to take a backseat. But not with Paritosh. He aspires to do a doctorate in the future. And precisely that’s the reason why he was so enthusiastic to be a part of the IBS Admissions 2008. This is what he says, “I always knew I shall be coming back to the campus as a teacher. I didn’t foresee that I’ll be here as an active member of the IBSAF committee. It is a great honor to be a part of Board of Governors for IBSAF, one of the biggest and fastest growing alumni federations. I thrive to make IBSAF a vibrant platform for young minds to interact and connect with each other in mutually beneficial ways. This year I also got an opportunity to interview the young MBA aspirants. It is another innovative move to connect the industry with the MBAs from the very beginning”.

When asked about his responses with regards to the changing world of corporate finance, Paritosh replies with élan, “Today we are living in a borderless, interconnected world in terms of business, especially finance. Earlier the corporate sectors in India used to struggle for arranging the finances, where as today they have privy to lot of instruments and varied set of investors for raising the funds. On the one hand, it allows the young entrepreneurs to test new ideas through private equity and venture funding and on the other, it allows the established firms to work on bigger projects through LBOs, ECBs, GDR/ADRs, PE etc.” Avenues have opened up and according to Paritosh, the onus is now on the firms to continuously innovate and assume world class status to maintain the top position. The corporate sectors need to follow the world-class standards of accountancy, transparency and corporate governance. For this, the role of CFO has assumed greater importance and he is now an important part of the Strategic Management Group.

It is but obvious that a person of his expertise, Paritosh would also have a sound view on Indian and World Economy. He goes on to elaborate that in the past few years, Indian economy has built a stronger base, both politically and economically. The present generation India is fortunate enough to enjoy the benefits. He thinks that India is sure to play a bigger role in the world scenario and the challenge is to engage the youth in a more meaningful way. It is imperative to empower the youth with education and to create more jobs. This needs to be done on an emergency basis as the world economy is undergoing a paradigm shift and facing trying times. The developed countries are growing at a slower pace and a new set of countries are ready to become the new engines of growth. The overall growth shall depend on how fast the new emerging economies are able to wear this hat.

Paritosh’s observations of the future are in perfect sync with his opinions about his alma mater. He says, “From a young ambitious baby, IBS today is synonymous with Youth and Vigor. We all have struggled to build a name for ourselves and for the institute. This struggle has made everyone work harder. I am happy to see the institute growing at a fast pace. Today the onus is on the students, alumni and the institute to work even harder and build a world-class institute of learning. The Hyderabad campus is mind boggling. The vast expanse and the facilities make me desire to rejoin as a student. I envy the students out there. I wish them all the best.”

When asked about his IBSAF experience, Paritosh says:

Frankly speaking, I was not sure when I first attended the meet in Hyderabad. There will be very few institutes who have a separate dedicated division and a budget to engage the alumni. But here, the focus is not only to make the alumni a brand ambassador but to make IBS an important part of each of us. It wants to keep the elements of fun and continuous learning burning in each of us. I am delighted to see that we are still being asked what more can be done to help us grow in personal and professional life.

According to him, the holistic approach adopted by IBS has been the most important factor that helped the institute successfully climb one peak after the other. The updated curriculum, the international tie ups, the publications from Icfai Press, close interaction with the industry, own campuses, in-house training of the teachers, developing own case studies, engaging the alumni and the desire to be the best—are the secrets of the IBS success story.

Hear out his candid candor. Listen to him answering these questions:

» One thing that IBSAF can do to make your experience better…
Building up an online resource database for the alma mater.

» What types of information/features would you like to see in IBSAF World?
IBSAF World should be synonymous with fun and should provide with a frank platform       to the alma mater to share their views, experiences, successes and failures in life.

» In what way would you like to be more involved with your Alma mater?
I look forward to suggestions from the institute and my friends (alma mater).

» Your suggestions to the young starters…
PAST is gone and one can not change anything about it. FUTURE is unpredictable and       one can only wish for it. PRESENT is the only gift that we have. Use it judiciously, enjoy       it and work hard without letting the past glories or failures to affect it. And also do not       lose it in false momentary pleasure but use it in building true happiness.
Remember: Rejoiced in youth, repented in age.
