Uddipan Nath, IBS Kolkata ('99)

Management Consultant

Mott Macdonald

You and your family …

My immediate family consists of my mother, wife and I. I got married to Sucheta in the Spring of 2006. She is a journalist by profession. Our extended family includes a select list of our closest friends, who have been with us through out thick and thin.

You and IBS …

IBS happens to be my first window to the world of business and economics. I graduated from IBS at a time when the institution was in its formative years. We were quite aware that we were a part of the brand building process. Professional excellence of the initial batches would be instrumental for the business school to acquire a place of its own in the coming years. Common to every new venture, we had our share of challenges & infrastructural constraints. Looking back, it now occurs that those were the real and most telling training on resource management –getting to do more with less or nothing.

Your career after IBS …

I was a fresh graduate when I had joined Shalimar Paints. From a Management Trainee at Shalimar, to Mott MacDonald as Management Consultant, it has indeed been an exciting journey. I have played many a roles – corporate marketing, marketing communications, business development, marketing research & engineering, industry and business analyst, and finally a corporate strategy consultant. It has been a wonderful mix of learning, implementing and re-learning.

Your ways of handling high pressure situations at work …

As my adorable sister in law keeps complimenting “No wonder your balancing act is so wonderful”…That’s what life has been for me.

Work-home balance; how do you maintain that?

It is really a skill. I am still honing it, but I guess it has been pretty much natural to me.

Biggest lesson so far …

Investing in relationships

Your idol …

Professionally none. But my father and his life has had a profound impact on mine. So, he, in many ways, has been my idol.

Future of finance services in India and abroad…

Finance services should witness intense marketing warfare across all industries. India’s semi urban and rural belts would be the next destinations for diverse financial services activities. The Tier II & III towns and villages are fast emerging as battlegrounds for MNCs and Indian corporate houses. Even the governments and governmental agencies would soon be seen aggressively into the hard selling, using innovative marketing ploys, to woo investors.

My friends and batch-mates at IBS...

My days at IBS have given me a treasured set of friends. Though most of us are scattered across geographical boundaries, technology has enabled us to remain connected.

My advice to fellow alumni …

Let’s keep on doing the excellent work. Let us all be good corporate Samaritans.
