Q: Please tell us something about yourself.
A: I am an engineer by qualification and a manager by profession. WORK to me is a Wonderful Opportunity to Reengineer Knowledge. I strongly believe that if one does his/her best then the rest would follow. Having worked with a single company for close to nine years, I have come full circle in knowing how and where an MBA can apply himself / herself within the framework of an organization; it is just about being ordinary with the ability to achieve the extra-ordinary. Neither chills nor frills but enjoy all the thrills. |
| Q: How would you look back on your student days?
Student days were fun and they lacked the dynamics of the corporate world. My tenure with IBS did equip me with the right skills to take on the corporate gauntlet. IBS was also in its infancy and as a student we did face a few trials and tribulations but all is well that ends well. |
| Q: How do you feel now… to come back to the campus in a changed role?
Getting back to the IBS campus is like getting into a changed world with the new campus and associated facilities. I am sure that the institute has placed itself amongst the very best in the country. To be associated with the institute in a changed role is a pleasant experience and an opportunity to be a part of the success that a world class education the institute is providing. It’s a great way for the alumni to be able to give back to the alma mater for all the learning that has made us what we are today. |
| Q: IBS now v/s IBS during your days…
The IBS I know and the IBS of today is actually the phenomenal story of metamorphosis—from being a fledgling to a full fledged center of educational excellence. The very change in the learning environment is unbelievable. I envy the campus and the new-age facilities which did not exist during our times. |
| Q: Your comments on the campus
The sprawling IBS campus is a sure delight for sore eyes. I would not deter from comparing it with the ISB campus which is also a marvel in itself. The sheer size of the IBS campus is overwhelming and I am sure it has been packed with the best of everything to ensure the grooming of best-of-breed professionals. |
| Q: IBS ranked 9th…Your comments …
I guess it was only a matter of time that IBS got the recognition that it deserved! The ranking is merely an indication of where IBS is headed. I am sure it will soon be among the top ranked centre for management education in the country and one among the best in the world. Again, IBS has done its best and the rest is sure to follow. |
| Q: The students now at IBS are availing more facilities than you had in your days. Your remarks ...
I am truly happy for my fellow-mates at IBS who now enjoy better facilities. IBS has ensured the right environment to foster the right atmosphere to go through an academic grind with all other things taken care of. The most important thing is that IBS continues to be a choice institution to students across the country. |
| Q: Your perceptions on the progress of your institution…
The only thing constant in the progress is CHANGE. The progress is a result of deliberate changes which have positively propelled the institution to greater heights. |
| Q: One thing that can make your IBSAF experience better?
I look forward to more opportunities to be involved with IBSAF. I would like to see IBSAF as a front-ending tool for exposing current students at IBS to the corporate world. This can be done through getting alumni to speak at lectures, creating project task-forces for internal and external assignments, make IBSAF a power center for placements for new and old students of IBS and many other things. |
| Q: In what way would you like to be more involved with your Alma mater?
Alumni interactions could be enhanced but having more number of events which could include the following: - Batch reunions at campus - Panel discussions with current students - Online discussion forums |
Q: What types of information or features would you like to see in your newsletter IBSAF World?
IBSAF World is a wonderful way to stay in touch with IBS and also fellow alumni members. Information on specific developments at IBS and events by ICFAI would help alumni members |
| Q: Your advice to the young starters…
The AAA mantra for success: Ability, Attitude and Adaptability. Ability – Enhance your professional capabilities (includes knowledge and skill repository) when you have the chance and the best place to do so- at IBS. Attitude – Have an attitude to match you personality. A positive perspective (includes approach, ambition and outlook) helps you fit into anyplace, anytime. Adaptability – Maintain a high level of the ‘learnability’ quotient. Perform, coach and be coached to contribute efficiently and effectively towards the achievement of organizational and personal / professional goals. |

Mr. Vidyashankar Ramakrishnan, IBS Mumbai, (’99), spent a few moments with IBSAF to elaborate upon his impressions as he took part in the IBS Admissions 2008. Here’s the excerpt of the conversation. 1. Please tell us something about yourself.
I am a simple fun loving person wanting to excel in the world of Finance, specifically in the Corporate Finance World. 2. How would you look back on your student days? My student days were very fulfilling in terms of the learning opportunities that I had at the institute and the quality time that I had got to interact with the faculty members. My best learning experience came to me in Lonavala when Ms Pratibha Seth had taken all of us for a two day off-site meet to educate us on Behavioural Sciences. |
How do you feel now… to come back to the campus in a changed role?
Coming back to the place where I had attended the interview as a prospective student and cleared it was a thrill in its own. It was a most pleasant experience and I have to thank Mr. Maximiano Almeida of IBSAF (Mumbai) and Mr. Girish Bhailikar of IBSAF(HQ) for all the gains that I had made during my short stay at Hyderabad.

• IBS now v/s IBS during your days…
There is a world of difference. During our time, we were hardly known in the industry. The industry was unable to differentiate between ICFAI (our parent body) and IBS an independent Business School not dependent or directly linked to ICFAI. The Business School is now well recognized in the Industry and I would say that “All the diligent hard work put in by the Alumni from Class of 1997 to Class of 2000 has finally paid off big time”. I guess we have a real bright future going forward and I am bullish on this.
|
• Your comments on the campus …
Amazing, completely stunned, mind-blowing………………
|
• The students now at IBS are availing more facilities than you had in your days. Your remarks ...
Feeling very jealous. But then this is a clear indication of the progress made by the Institute. Also the fact that this question is put up shows how aware the Institute is about its shortcomings of the past. Actually feels good overall.
|

Every possible way that the Institute deems fit. I would now like to start giving back to the Institute in return of what I have gained from the Institute all these years.

I am currently working as a Senior Consultant, with the IBM, based in Hyderabad. 2. How would you look back on your student days? I recollect them very fondly. I miss those days of frantic presentations, project works etc. I miss my friends and classmates with whom we used to work day in and day out. How do feel now… to come back to the campus in a changed role? It feels nice. I think the current batches of students are lucky to have such wonderful facilities being provided to them. Coming back to the college after all these years makes me feel good. It’s nice to see students studying and running around to catch their assignments / classes. I feel at times, I should take a break and rejoin the college to update myself. |
• IBS now v/s IBS during your days…
Almost incomparable. Gone are those days where we, students, used to fight for meager resources. People did not recognize IBS in the industry as well as they do now. Economy has opened up; new career opportunities are available today. Students are more focused today than the days we passed out.

Mr.Ravi Rathi, IBS Hyderabad (’99), a member of the Hyderabad CEC chapter, took time out of his hectic schedule and became a part of the interview panel in the IBS Admissions 2008. We present here a brief encounter of our interview with him. 1. Please tell us something about yourself.
I am born and brought up in Hyderabad, in a traditional business family. I graduated from the Osmania University in 1997; completed Post Graduation from IBS with majors in Finance & Marketing and completed CFA in 1999. My business interests are Paper & Paper Board Distribution, Stock Markets and Finance. We are also the manufacturers of “Relexwell” brand of Coir Mattresses in Hyderabad & Kolkata.
I got married to Pooja in 1999 and now we are blessed with 2 kids, a son and a daughter. Related to trade & society equally.
|
2. Your reflections on your student days…
Nostalgic!
I think students’ life was very easy at that time. Though competition was there, but it was less, when compared to today. Cost of education was also very less, compared to today.
3. Your feeling to visit the campus……….in a changed role…
It feels great being on the other side of the table. But there is a fear whether you would be able to do justice to the students whom you would be interviewing and to the institution equally, as the right set of students have to be inducted into the campus. If the choice is not right, then both the institute and the student would suffer.
|
4. IBS then v/s IBS now…
The only thing permanent in this world is “CHANGE” and accordingly IBS has been changing every year. From just one building at Nagarjuna Hills, IBS has now developed into a more than 100 acre campus in the past 10 years. The curriculum has changed; the ambience is very elegant, latest technology, updated info et al. At the time that we were studying, IBS was trying to establish itself, now it’s well established and has a brand of its own - IBS, a separate entity from its parent institute Icfai. I would like to appreciate the booklet IBS gave to the students who have come to interviews, about Hyderabad, with so much information that even a Hyderabadi wouldn’t know about Hyderabad.
|
5. Your comments on the campus…
Very good campus, a lot of landscaping and greenery, well maintained, elegant atmosphere, latest technology and equipments, and even a good canteen. Can’t comment on the hostel facility as I have not seen the same. Liked the mango trees, please maintain the same.
|
6. IBS, ranked 9th… your comments…
I’m proud that we are among the top 10 institutions of India. We are happy that IBS is well established and recognized all over India and has a brand of its own.
|
7. Students at IBS, today…
It’s true that students today avail more facilities than we had, but this has become the order of the day, as technology and information have to be updated very fast, in today’s lifestyle, as the competition has also increased. From the beginning, the standard of the curriculum has been very high at IBS, but now the industry interaction is more.
|
8. Perception on the progress of IBS…
An institution in one building (1997) and the same institution being on a campus (2008) has a changed perception. Today IBS is bigger, for better, for both the present students and the alumni. As said earlier, IBS is now a well established brand and we need to keep it up.
|
9. Your suggestions for better IBSAF experience…
1 Bonding with Alma mater.
2. Guest Lectures.
|
10. Suggestions for IBSAF World…
Try to reach to more and more alumni members, and lets share some really good experiences from the alumni, from various facets of work life, like say professional, business, a NGO, society, et al. Print articles of really successful people say in business or a project, say as a case study, a real life first hand experience.
|
11. Advice to young starters…
Keep abreast with the latest info around, as this would help you go a long way. Becoming number one in your selected field is easy, but the main task is maintaining it.
